IQUIQUE: AN IRRESISITIBLE DESTINATION

Iquique, capital of the first region, is one of the most visited cities in the north of Chile and one of the most important tourist attractions all over the country. It is located in the extreme northern part of Chile and it is considered the starting point for all the excursions to visit the “Chilean Altiplano” and the saltpeter offices such as “Humberstone” or “Santa Laura”.
Iquique has a strategic location with a warm climate that allows tourism during the entire year. During the last decade Iquique has had a continuous economical growth. That has helped the city to be known as an irresistible destination for tourists all over the world.
This city is very well known for its wonderful beaches, its beautiful desert, and also because of Zofri or “Zona Fanca”, which is a huge commercial center (240 hectars) that allows people to buy whatever they may find (specially perfumes and electrical devices) without paying taxes.
Many people say that Iquique has a special “cosmopolitan taste” because it is full of people from different countries. In fact, there is a huge Chinese population, an Indian population and many Muslims (among others). Thanks to this diversity of cultures and due to the great commercial development, the gastronomic area has grown very quickly, allowing people to enjoy restaurants that offer typical Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Spanish, Mexican, Peruvian and Brazilian dishes. You may also find many Chilean restaurants offering seafood and a wide variety of fish from the area.
During the day tourists may walk along Baquedano Street which is full of beautiful houses and wooden mansions built during the mining periods. People may also visit the Regional Museum which dates from 1892 and that contains important photographs, mummies from ancient cultures and certain objects from ancient indigenous people. If someone is interested in music, the Municipal Theater may be a great option. It was inaugurated as an opera house in 1890 and it was declared a National Monument in 1977. During summer people usually spend the day at the beach where you can practice canoeing or kayaking. Iquique is also a good place for paragliding. It starts from a hill located in the upper part of the city and it ends at the beach. If you are afraid of heights, but you don’t want to miss this experience, you may go with a special trainer who will help you all the way.
At night people have a large variety of pubs, bars and restaurants to visit. On Costanera Avenue you will find very good places where you may eat delicious dishes and listen to good music. You can also visit the Casino that has a great variety of games and a big bar. If you are young and would like to go dancing, you may go with some friends to “Kamikaze” or to “Sala Murano”, the two main discos in the city.
So, if you are thinking where to go for winter vacation on during summer, don’t forget that Iquique is the perfect place to enjoy with your family and friends.

Dear Eli:

I was a really good student in high school, and I wanted to be a lawyer, so I left the city that I lived in and moved out of my house to “study”. The thing is that when classes started I realized how fun it was not having a curfew, getting drunk and having all kinds of freedom that I didn’t have when I was living with my parents. After the first semester I had flunked 2 out of 5 classes but I told my parents that I had passed all of my classes and that I was the best student of my class. Of course my parents where really proud and happy for me. After 5 years of university, I have to graduate but the problem is that I can’t do it because I flunked so many classes. Now my mom is telling everyone how she will have the nicest party to celebrate my graduation and how I will become a prestigious lawyer. What can I do? I have been lying for such a long time and I don’t want my parents to be disappointed.

Should I tell them the truth or just let them think that I will graduate this year and keep up with this lie that is getting bigger and bigger everyday? – THE LAWYER OR LIAR

Dear Lawyer:

I think honesty is the best thing. You should tell your parents the truth since you haven’t done it before. They will probably get really upset but it is a price that you will have to pay for such a big lie. After you tell the truth you will feel much better and you will be able to continue your studies without lying to your family.

Dear Eli:

My family had a nanny when I was a child; she lived with us for many years, until she got pregnant and left my house. I was 14 when she got pregnant so I was old enough to realize that she couldn’t have a baby because she couldn’t raise a child alone and she didn’t have enough money. To solve her problem she would give her child up for adoption to a wealthy person that could raise the baby without any problems. This wealthy person turned out to be my aunt. We never heard from the nanny until a month ago she came to my house and demanded to know my aunt’s address because she had come to get her son back. My family talked to her and told her that she couldn’t do that because her son didn’t know he was adopted and she couldn’t come and try to take him after 15 years. My aunt is heartbroken and doesn’t know what to do. She is also really afraid that her son could leave her and go away with his birth mother. He is an adolescent and is not getting along with his adoptive mother. What can we do to stop this woman? — DESESPERATE COUSIN.

Dear Cousin:

What a story there! Well I think first of all you should tell your aunt to talk to your nanny and reach an agreement. If she is now willing to meet her son, it is for a reason. I am not on her side or anything but I think that is better to talk things out. Your cousin is old enough to know who his real mother is and it probably would be a shock for him to know the truth but he will make the right decision. Don’t worry! Many people have good relationships with their birth mothers and also with their adoptive mother. Things will resolve but I recommend you to stay out of this problem and just be really supportive to your cousin and aunt.

Pubs in Iquique

The city of Iquique, which means “where the birds and the wolves sleep” in the indigenous language, is the capital of the first region and is located in the north of Chile. At present, not only is this the largest and most important city in Northern Chile, but it is also one of the most beautiful in the country.

Iquique is a beautiful tourist and city and this city is bohemian because the weather is nice and there are many sights to enjoy. Nightlife is also present on the waterfront. The casino offers games of chance and shows are also performed at the pubs, restaurants and discos in this beautiful and booming city that has it all . For example the avenue Playa Brava is where are the best pubs are: Runas, Choza, Papa Gallo, Vanghog, Vi-Vu, El Epicentro, La estación, and Barsovia. The most popular pub-restaurant is Runas. This pub is open 24/7 and has happy hour all night long and a delicious, and tasty and unusual food. For example: wild boar meat, ostrich meat, different kind of cheeses and so on. This pub has live music with different singers every week, a pool table, and you can ask for some different table games. Runas is a little expensive but exclusive, where only the adults can go. This pub doesn’t allow, children but Papa Gallo Pub allows children.

The Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable icons of the united states, and in a more general sense, represents liberty, democracy, and scape from opression. The statue depicts a woman standing upright, dressed in a flowing robe and a seven point spiked crown representing the seven seas and seven continents. hold a stone tablet close to her body in her left hand, shows the date of the nation’s birth (July 4, 1776) and a flaming torch high in her right hand signifies enlightenment. The statue has acquired a new meaning as a symbol of welcome to immigrants. The statue is made of pure copper on a framework of steel. The statue was a gift of friendship given to the United States by France in 1886. It is located on Liberty Island, in New York city on liberty island in the Hudson riber. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28,1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on july 4, 1986. The statue was constructed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi as An inspiring symbol of America, the structural framework given as a gift from France in honor of the first centennial of the United States. The pedestral construction was finished in April of 1886. The Statue was completed in France in July, 1884 and arrived in New York Harbor in June of 1885 on board the France which transported the Statue of Liberty from France to the United States. In transit, the Statue was reduced to 350 individual pieces and packed in 214 crates. The Statue was re-assembled on her new pedestal in four months times. On October 28,1886, the dedication of the Statue of Liberty took place in front of thousands of spectators.
