DECREPIT CADAVER POWER AND BRUTALITY

DECREPIT CADAVER
POWER AND BRUTALITY
by Andres Valdivia
this band formed around 2004, and was created by Jorge Reynaud, who focused on the death metal. After a while, Christian Villalobos joined the band and they started to create the first songs of group. During this period of time many others musicians were playing with the group.

Later in the same year, Hugo Bravo and Christian Ly were recruited, The first on the guitar and vocals and the second on bass, Christian Ly was with the band for a period of one year and then he was replaced by Luis Muñoz, who is the present bass player.

In the beginning of 2007, the band searched for another vocalist and the place was won by Carlos Diaz for his brutality on stage in his debut in the Open Air Festival in Antofagasta.

Interview with the band

In these 3 years how has the of the band developed as musicians?

Well it hasn’t been easy because we have had lots a change in our line up and therefore that we lost so much time. This means that we have had work to maintain the brutality of the group.

In your EP, “The concept of murder” I can say that your metal is played with a lot of technique, what are the influences and how do these influences affect your music?

First of all, our priority is the brutality before the technique, the technique is only part of our music, When we are composing our influence is the well executed music and it has to express our ideas in a good way.

What are your plans for the future ?
We hope to release a disc, because we have 12 songs and we are prepared for record them. We have lots of tours on our agenda and we hope to confirm.

Chilean Food

by Claudia Castro

Chilean food comes especially from the sea and the land. Corn, called ‘choclo’ in Chile, is an essential ingredient of several typical dishes. Corn cake, which is a mix of corn with chopped onions and meat, is usually served in an individual clay plate. This is called ‘pastel de choclo’ and it is one of the most characteristic Chilean dishes.

In Iquique, the abundance of fish and shellfish is a delight for the gastronomy of this city and also it is said shellfish is a great aphrodisiac. White Sea Bass with butter, fried conger, stuffed crab, and sea urchin with green sauce are one of the most requested dishes, especially by foreigners.

Another favorite Chilean appetizer is the empanada. There are two kinds of empanadas: you can fry them or make them in an oven. They also can be stuffed with chopped onions and meat or chicken, or any kind of shellfish. Either way it tastes delicious.

Now wines are one essential beverage at dinner time. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot and Carmenere are some of the most popular wines. The ‘pisco sour,’ a mix of pisco, lemon juice and sugar, is one typical aperitif among Chilean people. For the national holidays, such as September 18th, our independence day, we drink a beverage called ‘chicha,’ that is usually fermented grape juice.

Dear Eli.

Dear Eli:
I just broke up with my girlfriend and I am really sad, We had been together for 2 years now. One day I went to her house and I found her with another guy so what was I supposed to do? I had to break up with her. Now I am feeling really lonely and even though she cheated on me I still love her and need her very much. Do you think I will look like a fool if I ask her to get back together? What can I do? Is she a bad person what do you think? LOVER BOY.
Dear Lover Boy:
What happened to you is really sad but even if it hurts you need to let go. If she cheated on you once she will cheat on you again, you know what they say “Once a cheater, always a cheater.” Just try to do some of the things you used to do when you two weren’t together, try to entertain yourself in another way and time will pass quickly. After some time you will realize this was the best decision. Good luck!

Dear Eli:
My best friend told me she wanted to commit suicide, at first I just laughed about it but now I think she was serious, She is depressed and I am worried about her. We are roommates and I don’t want anything bad to happen to her. A friend told me that suicides never say that they will kill themselves but I don’t think she is lying because I have seen her crying desesperately and asking for help. Once she told me that all of her pain will end when she is gone. I really don’t know what to do. She is a person who likes to have all the attention on her so I don’t know if it is right to tell her parents or take her to see an specialist. Please help! THE GOOD FRIEND.
Dear good friend:
What you are telling me it’s awful, once I had a roommate who tried to commit suicide, but luckily her parents were able to help her before she did. I think you should call her parents right away and tell them what is going on. If your roommate is really thinking about committing suicide the best thing a friend can do is help her. Her parents will know what to do and they will ask for help.

Sports.

by Marco A. Ahumada A.
First of all, this magazine is going to introduce the sport section. Therefore we are going to start giving the reader a definition about the concept.

A good definition of a sport would be: "An activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitions". A similar definition in the Oxford dictionary would be: "Activity that you do for pleasure and that needs physical effortor skill, usually done in a aspecial area and according to fixed rules".

For your information, in order to add to this definition we can say that sports can be divided in two types of sports: Mental and Physical sports.

Since ancient times, sports have been a discipline, an important one, in which the contenders are brought face to face in order to win the match. Structures and pictures have been found in China, suggesting engagement in sports activities as early as 4.000 B.C like gymnastics. In early Egypt evidence was found about fishing and swimming sports.

Ancient Greeks had established a wide range of sports which were a prominent part of their culture creating the Olimpic Games, being the first Olimpic game organized in Olimpia in 776 B.C.

Now a days, new sports have been transitioning from the physical aspect to the mental or physical aspect of a competition involving new techniques to perfect any discipline.

Religion

By: Hugo Armijo

Religion usually is a candescent theme among people. There are different religions

around the world and most people are identified with one. Religion attempts to give

men and women spiritual peace and an intimate relationship with a divinity.

Buddhism, Confucionism and Islamic religions have millions of followers, however

Christianity is probably the most prominent faith in the world with millions of

believers.

Among religions there are important differences, some of them are that they have

different handbooks ( Koran, Bible, etc.), different beliefs, different divinities and

conceptions of life and death. On the other hand, among founders, Jesuschrist is the

only person who rose from death and through centuries he has changed millions of

people giving them a reason to live.

Must See Movies: "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"

By Nicko

English Gazette's Rating

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

Director: Michael Gondry
Genre: Drama / Romance
Cast: Jim Carrey (Joel), Kate Winslet (Clementine), Tomas Wilkinson (Dr. Howard Mierzwiak ), Kirsten Dunst (Mary), Mark Ruffalo (Stan) and Elijah Wood (Patrick).
Web: http://www.eternalsunshine.com

In this second edition of “Must See Movies” I took the liberty of reviewing one of my favorite movies. It is a 2004 film called Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It`s a big title for a huge movie.. Why is it one of my favorite movies? I can`t really say why, it just is. The first time I saw it (I have actually seen it 13 times) I saw it without Spanish subtitles so I was really lost. By the second time (still with no subtitles) I understand it and it dazzled me. I must admit it is not an easy movie to understand; the psychedelic special effects, the plot twists or its odd structure can really confuse you, but in the end this strange but brilliant flick pays off. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a movie you can either love or hate due to its complicated plotline, but once you get it the only thing you wanna do is watch it again to see all those little details that you missed. These little details are what make the film so awesome.

Like last week`s movie Little Miss Sunshine, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind has an amazing script written by Oscar winners Charlie Kaufman (Adaptation, Being John Malkovich) and Michael Gondry. It also has incredible performances by the hilarious but now dramatic Jim Carrey and by the gorgeous and talented Kate Winslet (anyone who doesn`t like Kate must be blind or have really bad taste). Another similarity between these two movies is that they were directed by former music videos directors who are now exploring cinema.

Now I`ll give you a brief plot summary about Eternal Sunshine. ESOTSM is about a couple (Joel and Clementine) who undergo an erasing-memory procedure (at Lacuna Inc. Company) after their relationship falls apart. During this particular procedure you can see their entire relationship from the moment they first met till the ending of it. I won`t tell you more, watch it.

Well, from now on I will be suggesting some songs with lyrics related to the theme of the movie, not necessarily songs from the soundtrack, just any song related to it.

Song: Before I Forget
Artist: Slipknot

ESOTSM taglines
*Would you erase me?

*Do I know you?

*You can erase someone from your mind. Getting them out of your heart is another story.

"Deportes Iquique" Nuestro C.D.I

Wendsday May 9Th, 2007
By Marco A. Ahumada A.

Deportes Iquique or Iquique Municipal Iquique is a team that was created in our city and it was founded on May, 21st 1978. The most memorable participation in a local tournament was when our team won a Chilean tournament named Polla Gol Cup in 1981. But after 10 years in the first division the team went down to the second division and after that to third division in 2002. But now in 2006 Deportes Iquique showed us that Iquique is still a land of champions rising again to second division.

This year, Iquique has obtained a very good presentation in the official tournament of the second division, being in 5th place in rankings we hope we can win the championship and rise to the first division tournament, also called “Honor Division”, where there are a lot of famous teams like Colo- Colo, Universidad de Chile and Universidad Católica.

Our team has one of the biggest stadiums of the regions, and is the official stadium for the soccer team. The name of the stadium is “Tierra de Campeones” (Land of Champions its name in English), which is very complete because it has all kinds of facilities especially for other sports.

Here in Iquique and like any city that has a soccer team, we have a mascot, the Dragon. This mascot is not exclusive to the soccer team; the dragon is the Municipal Iquique’s official mascot of our soccer team and our city.

This weekend, on Sunday May 13th, Municipal Iquique plays in the third region against Deportes Copiapó

AGENTINA: Striking Teacher Killed by Police

Dianne Diaz

A national general strike has been called for

Monday 9th, April, by the teaching unions after

a protester was killed by a tear gas grenade.

Carlos Fuentealba,41, was killed on Thursday

night after being hit in the head by the gas

grenade fired by the police.

Mr. Fuentealba was sitting in a car that was
part of a rolling blockade when the shot was

fired, the car was suddenly surrounded by 20

officers who began to strike it with rifle butts

so that they would stop in the middle of the

clouds of tear gas. Another officer then fired

a tear gas grenade from a distance of less

than two meters, into the back windshield.

Carlos, who was in the back seat, was struck

in the neck. He died from his injuries late on

Thursday night.

Teachers in the central province, along
with

many of their colleagues in other provinces,

have been striking since the 5th of March after

the state government refused to raise wages.

In response to the Governor's refusal to

negotiate strikers' pickets began to block roads

on Thursday in order to increase the pressure.

Riot police were sent in to attack these

demonstrators, with many sustaining injuries.

On Friday the two main roads in the state were

blocked by 200 picketers. There has been

unrest in the neighbouring provinces of Salta

and Santa Cruz, where brutality has also been

reported. Teachers have also been striking in

the provinces of Tierra del Fuego and La Rioja,

and in Formosa and Chaco.

Teachers have called for an
"hour of mourning"

on Monday, stating that no bus, train or refuse

services will operate during this time. Other

industries are also expected to take part.

However, as it will take place between 12pm

and 1pm this seems to be a rather small token

gesture.

“VALDIVIA: THE PEARL OF THE SOUTH”

Rose Marie Kuschel R.
May 02, 2007.

Valdivia, also called the “pearl of the South”, is one of the oldest cities in Chile and also one of the most visited tourist attractions all over the country. In fact, people usually describe it as Chile’s most beautiful city because of its wonderful surroundings and unique characteristics that make it totally different from all the other cities and places in this country.

Valdivia is located 835 kilometers south of Santiago, the capital city, and just a few hours from the rest of the southern cities like Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas and smaller towns like Frutillar, Angelmo etc. This city is also known as the “Pearl of the rivers” because it is located exactly in the place where the Calle – Calle, Valdivia and Cau – Cau Rivers join. This city belongs to the Los Lagos Region and it is the capital of the Province of Valdivia. It will continue being the capital of the newly created “Los Rios Region” in October 2007.

This city has a population of about 140.000 inhabitants, many of whom are German immigrants who came to Chile after the city was founded by Pedro de Valdivia, a Spaniard. This German influence helped this place to become a modern city mixed with the traditional architecture of another country. The early Spanish colonial past and the later history of German colonization left visible landmarks such as the huge Corral Bay Fort and the typical German-style wooden houses. Besides architecture, German education, agricultural method, and social life are still very strong in the southern part of Chile.

The Corral Bay Fort was a huge defensive system created by Spaniards between 1642 and 1671 to protect the city from pirates, natives and enemies. At that time, it was considered the strongest fortification of the southern Pacific. The biggest forts of this system were Castillo San Sebastian de la Cruz and Castillo San Luis de Alba y Amargos in Corral Bay, Castillo San Pedro de Alcantara in Mancera Island and Castillo de la Pura y Limpia Concepción de Monfort y Lemus in Niebla Beach. Niebla is now a small town commonly visited during summer because of its nice beach and interesting historic museum. Mancera Island and Corral Bay are also widely visited by tourists from all over world because of the great importance it has as part of the Chilean culture and history.

People visiting Valdivia during summer vacation may have the chance to be part of one of the city’s major events “Bierfest Valdivia.” This celebration is a reduced version of Germany’s Oktoberfest. The main sponsor and organizer is “Kunstman Beer,” an important company founded by German immigrants years ago, but bought later by a national corporation.

Another important celebration is “Semana Valdiviana” which takes place every year during the second week of February. During this celebration, people usually travel along Calle – Calle River in small ships or boats that are mainly used to transport tourists to different destinations such as Mancera Island, Niebla Beach, Corral Bay, a large botanical garden located on an island, important historical museums, etc. During this festival, the government officials are in charge of choosing a queen that will be the winner of the festival and the person that will represent the city throughout the year. During the last day of celebration, thousands of people light candles and put them in the water to illuminate the area while boats and bigger ships sail along the river.

Valdivia is also known for its great variety of food including delicious desserts such as the typical German Kuchen or Strudel, good beer, big barbeques and “Crudos”, a typical German sandwich prepared with raw meat, onion cut in small pieces and a special sour cream. People who love chocolates may visit “Entrelagos”, a very famous company that makes delicious sweets.

Valdivia is undoubtedly an irresistible destination nobody should miss. It has the great advantage of being one of the cities with the most beautiful surroundings you will ever see and with the most delicious food you will ever taste.

Chilean Soccer

By Hugo Armijo

Chilean people practice different sports, however in this country they love soccer. This
sport has developed from the early years. Like most of the world, soccer is the biggest
sport in Chile. Kids of all ages play soccer in the streets, in empty fields, or anywhere
there is a ball.

Along the country there are little soccer fields called “ canchas “, these fields are
smaller playing areas made of concrete where people can play baby futbol or baby
soccer.

In Chile there are three big soccer clubs, they are Colo –Colo, Universidad de Chile and
Universidad Catolica. Thousand of people identify with them. Also, there are at least a
dozen of teams more, and huge soccer stadiums throughout Chile.
When the Chile team ( seleccion Chilena ) plays internationally, the entire country holds
its breath as it waits for a good outcome.

MUST SEE MOVIES: "Little Miss Sunshine"

By Nicko

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

Director: Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris
Genre: Comedy / Drama
Cast: Abigail Breslin (Olive), Greg Kinnear (Richard), Toni Collette (Sheryl), Alan Arkin (Granpa), Paul Dano (Dwayne) and Steve Carell (Frank).

This two-time Oscar winning movie is a jewel among ordinary rocks. You can say I am exaggerating a little bit, but when you stay in your seat watching the credits after the movie has ended and you say to yourself: “Damn, what has just happened?” you know that the hour and forty minutes that the movie lasted were worth it. It`s funny and touching at the same time. The junky grandpa, the bankrupt dad, the divorced mom, the suicidal uncle, the “mute” son and the Miss America wannabe daughter form the most dysfunctional but loving family. The movie`s strengths are the wonderful script (written by academy award winner Michael Arndt) and the great performances. And obviously we can`t leave out the Volkswagen bus and its clutch problem.

Alan Arkin (Oscar winner) and Abigail Breslin (Oscar Nominee) did a terrific job playing grandpa and Olive but I have to make special mention to Steve Carell (The office, The 40 year old virgin) whose outstanding performance as Frank gives him the funniest lines in the movie.

I might say that Little Miss Sunshine can easily be the best picture of 2006 (I would include Pan`s Labyrinth as well) so if you have the chance to watch it, please do. You won`t regret it.

Favorite Little Miss Sunshine quotes:

Richard: Oh my God, I'm getting pulled over. Everyone, just... pretend to be normal

Frank: (reading what Dwayne is writing on his notepad) But I Am Not Going To Have Any Fun Frank: Yeah, we're all with ya on that one, Dwayne.

Police officer: Okay, you're out. On the condition that you never enter your daughter in a beauty pageant in the state of California, ever again. Ever. Frank: I think we can live with that.

THE OLDEST BAKERY IN IQUIQUE

By Claudia Castro E.

It’s around five o’clock in the afternoon and from Juan Martinez Street, the smell of home-made bread comes out and it is such a sweet smell you can almost taste it in your mouth. It comes from the bakery called Olimpia, one of the oldest bakeries in Iquique. The difference with other bakeries nowadays is that Olimpia bakery does not sell drinks, milk or candies, rather just home made bread.

The place where this bakery is located is huge but only half of the place is occupied. The bakery only has two or three baskets where they put the bread. There is one big, old-style bar next to the wall and it measures more than one meter long, at the end of this only piece of furniture is the cash register. On the wall there is an old picture that is a representation of the work they have done for years.

The bakery was founded in the beginning of the 20th century by Hernán Cortez’s father, who now is the owner and he has maintained the family tradition.

The bakery has remained the same since it was founded, people from all over Iquique come to this bakery to buy home-made bread and take it right to their houses to have a nice cup of tea with the bread.

The bakery is open from seven to eleven thirty in the morning and in the afternoon it opens from five to eight o’clock.
